Gen Con 2026 Recap: All the Biggest Board Game & TTRPG News, Reveals, and Surprises

The dust has finally settled on Indianapolis for another massive weekend of cardboard, dice, and miniatures. While my own summer gaming calendar usually leans toward quiet cabin weekends and old-school wargaming, it’s hard to ignore the sheer volume of news, shiny new boxes, and unexpected revivals that dropped at Gen Con 2026.

Grab a cup of coffee and let’s take a look at what the hobby world was buzzing about this year.

🧛 The Gothic Invasion: Dracula is Back

If there was a thematic winner for the con floor, it had to be Avalon Hill's heavy push into gothic horror.

Fury of Dracula: 5th Edition: Easily one of the most talked-about physical releases of the weekend. Hidden-movement fans finally got their hands on the updated 5th edition, which comes packed with striking new art, a brand-new playable character, and an official "Fast Play" variant that uses a plague-zone mechanic to speed up the endgame showdown.

Talisman Sagas: Crown of Blood: A great little spin for Talisman 5e fans looking for a tighter, narrative-driven hunt featuring Mina Harker and Van Helsing tracking down the Count himself.

📦 The Big Board Game Drops & Pocket-Sized Hits

There was no shortage of heavy euros and clever redesigns crowding the dealer hall:

Wingspan Pocket (Stonemaier Games): Stonemaier brought their new standalone travel-sized title to the floor. It completely strips down the engine-building experience into a brisk 30-minute, single-row card affair using ingenious double-sided cards (food on one side, bird on the other) and new green ongoing passive powers. It's built for quick games on the go.

Drillers & Timespan: Heavy euro enthusiasts formed massive queues for limited convention copies of Drillers, while Timespan kept the open-play tables busy all weekend.

CRAB RAGE! (Osprey Games): Easily the most chaotic, high-energy crowd-pleaser of the show. A lighthearted area-control game where crustacean wrestlers battle using "rage" tokens—pure tabletop fun.

💍 Looking Ahead to 2027: Middle-earth Returns

For fans of Tolkien-themed strategy, Restoration Games dropped a massive teaser for next year:

The Lord of the Rings: The King's Gambit: Serving as a spiritual successor to the multi-board classic The Queen's Gambit, this upcoming 2027 release focuses squarely on the desperate defense of Minas Tirith and the Battle of Pelennor Fields. If the behind-the-scenes demo previews are anything to go by, this will be a must-watch for historical and fantasy board gamers alike.

📜 TTRPGs: Crossovers, Alpha Tests, and Retro Revivals

D&D "Universes Beyond": Wizards of the Coast dropped a bombshell announcement that licensed crossover expansions are officially hitting D&D, starting with a World of Warcraft ruleset in late 2026 and Star Wars following in 2027, alongside long-awaited returns to Dark Sun and Greyhawk.

Vampire 6th Edition (V6) Alpha: Paradox surprised the narrative-RPG crowd by dropping an alpha playtest for V6, shifting the system toward a sleek, modern narrative mechanics style reminiscent of Blades in the Dark.

The One Ring – Revised Core Rules: Free League showcased a gorgeous refreshed edition of The One Ring, maintaining full compatibility while giving the layout and rules a clean, polished pass—plus some stunning faux-leather collector's editions.

Another Gen Con in the books. Between the massive box drops and the future 2027 teasers, my wallet is breathing a sigh of relief that I stayed home, but the painting desk inspiration is running at an all-time high.

Star Wars: Legion Announcement and Thoughts

Star Wars: Legion is now official -- Fantasy Flight Games just announced it yesterday at GenCon. Miniatures are about 35mm, (way too big in my opinion). It features very card-driven gameplay, but it's Fantasy Flight Games, so no surprise there....

35mm is a head-scratcher because that means an AT-AT would need to be about 3 feet high at that scale. Bummer as I was hoping for 15mm or smaller for larger scale battles.  The worse news is that the miniatures are not compatible with Imperial Assault miniatures. So this goes from an auto pickup, to a wait and see.

GenCon Rumors - Star Wars: Legion

From GenCon, there is a rumor of a new game to be announced soon by Fantasy Flight Games.  The game is Star Wars: Legacy, and it is a new tabletop miniatures game with unpainted figures.

As a miniatures game, Star Wars: Legion invites you to enter the ground battles of the Galactic Civil War as the commander of a unique army filled with troopers, powerful vehicles, and iconic characters. While innovative mechanics for command and control simulate the fog of war and the chaos of battle, the game’s unpainted, easily assembled figures give you a canvas to create any Star Wars army you can imagine.

If true, this may explain the recent parting ways of Games Workshop and Fantasy Flight Games, as GW is the big player in the realm of two player miniature games, (especially with 8th Edition 40K getting such a good reception).

The two biggest questions at this point are:
1) Is this rumor true, and if so, when will it be announced?
2) What scale will the miniature be?  Too small, and the individual figures will not be interesting (who wants a 6mm Luke?).  Too big (28mm), and the iconic vehicles (AT-AT) that define Star Wars warfare will be hard to incorporate into the game.

I have a number of miniature games, but hoping the rumor is true, because who wouldn't love replaying the iconic Battle of Hoth?
