BlitzBowl: Ultimate Second Edition – (Another) New Era for BlitzBowl Fans and Newcomers Alike!

BlitzBowl: Ultimate Second Edition (UE2) has hit the shelves, and players are diving into the new tweaks, updated rules, and exciting changes that have arrived. For those unfamiliar, BlitzBowl is a streamlined, faster-paced version of Blood Bowl, making it ideal for quicker games while retaining the tactical depth and excitement of its parent game. Let’s break down the most important updates in this new edition:

Team Stat Adjustments: One of the most significant changes is the tweaking of team stats across the board, with almost every team receiving updates to make gameplay more balanced and immersive. Here are some notable changes:

  • Dark Elf Runners now have the "Dump-Off" ability, allowing them to make a free short throw when targeted for a block. This gives a nice tactical advantage, especially in a game where positioning and actions are critical.
  • Elven Union Linemen and Catchers have seen improvements in their Throwing stat, moving from 4+ to 3+, making them much more efficient at passing. Their Throwers also gain the "Expert Passer" ability, allowing re-rolls on failed throws—cementing the Elven Union as the go-to for precision passing plays.
  • Imperial Nobility sees quite a few changes, including a name change from "Retainer" to "Lineman," and a drop in Armor value. Their Throwers now have the "Running Pass" ability, which lets them make a short throw after a Run action—adding mobility to their strategy.
  • Teams like Ogre, Lizardmen, and Orcs have seen tweaks to their Emergency Reserves, which adjusts how frequently they can bring players back from the bench. These changes seem to streamline gameplay by limiting overpowered reserve mechanics from previous editions.

Mark Action Reworked: The Mark Action has seen a substantial change. Previously, a player could move up to two spaces, even after marking an opponent. Now, when a player marks an opponent, they must stop immediately. This change prevents players from exploiting movement after marking, leading to a more strategic game with a focus on positioning. Slower teams with good armor, like Dwarfs and Ogres, benefit from this, as they no longer face the threat of being overwhelmed by fast, Marking opponents.

Throw Team-Mate: For teams like Ogre, Halfling, and Goblin, the new rules for Throw Team-Mate bring a refreshing change. You can now target opposition players with this ability, and although the thrown player will get injured, the opposing player will be knocked down with a guaranteed hit. This adds an unpredictable yet fun dynamic to the game, and teams that rely on brute strength or wild tactics, such as the Ogres or Goblins, now have a more competitive edge.

Team Differentiation: One of the big goals with UE2 seems to have been enhancing team differentiation. Previously, many teams, such as Humans, Nobles, and Elven Union, felt too similar in playstyle. UE2 fixes this by giving teams unique abilities and stats that bring out their individual flavor. For example, Elven Union is now much more focused on precision passing, turning them into a squad of throw-demigods. Meanwhile, Imperial Nobility has become more fragile, but their abilities—like excellent medical treatment and passing options—give them a strategic advantage. Orcs are slightly more vulnerable but have become brawl-heavy, leaning into their brutality. The Wood Elf Wardancer now has a special ability called "Wardance," allowing a free Sidestep action, further differentiating this agile team from the rest. Necromantic teams also benefit from unique abilities, like the Werewolf’s "Violent" claws, and Flesh Golems’ "Stand Firm," making them tougher on the field.

No More Stopping the Clock: In the previous edition, players could discard a challenge card and effectively pause the game’s timer. This rule has been made mandatory in UE2—discarding a card is no longer optional, which forces players to keep the game moving. This subtle change eliminates stalling tactics, making for a faster, more dynamic match.

No End of Game Challenge Cards: Another notable absence is the "End of Game Challenge Cards." These cards, which offered bonus points at the end of a game, have been removed. Some players appreciated the unpredictability these cards brought, while others found them frustrating. Without these cards, the game is more predictable and stable, but players who enjoyed the excitement of a final turn comeback may miss them.

New Gameboard Options: In addition to rules and teams, BlitzBowl: UE2 introduces spicy new board layouts to change up gameplay. The game now includes new board configurations, each offering unique setups and opportunities for strategic positioning. These new boards give players a fresh experience, providing different shapes and obstacles that significantly affect how games play out. Whether you’re defending narrow lanes or positioning to exploit wide-open spaces, the updated boards make each match feel distinctive.

The Verdict: Is UE2 Worth It?

For new players, the core box includes Orcs and Dwarfs—a classic matchup that highlights the game's brutal yet tactical nature. These two iconic teams offer a perfect introduction to the game's mechanics, with the Orcs’ raw power clashing against the Dwarfs’ resilience, making for intense and strategic gameplay right out of the box.

For veteran BlitzBowl players, the changes in UE2 are exciting, especially if you're into team customization and strategic depth. With clearer distinctions between teams and the rebalancing of abilities, the game now offers more variety and unique playstyles, making each match feel fresh.

BlitzBowl: Ultimate Second Edition also shows Games Workshop's continuing commitment to support and balance the game, which is great for both casual players and competitive fans alike. The updates provide new strategies, fresh challenges, and refined gameplay, ensuring that BlitzBowl remains engaging and accessible while rewarding tactical depth. This ongoing attention to detail demonstrates their dedication to keeping this great game evolving and enjoyable for the community.

For those in the US, BlitzBowl: Ultimate Second Edition is now available at Barnes & Noble, making it easier than ever to get your hands on the latest version.

Classic Warhammer Fantasy Miniatures: The Tikiwood Sentinels (Wood Elf Army)

Nestled deep within an enchanted forest, a unique and spirited band of Wood Elves known as the Tikiwood Sentinels passionately defend their sacred home against the forces of darkness. Led by their valiant bowleader, Thornstrike, and guided by the wisdom of their enchanting sorceress, Blossomshade, this lively and diverse group consists of the mighty wood golem Spiritbark, mystical Dryads, elusive Waywatchers, and fearsome tiki-masked halflings. Each group brings their unique skills and abilities to form an extraordinary and unforgettable team. Together, the Tikiwood Sentinels employ their diverse talents to protect the forest from the encroaching darkness.

Thornstrike is the respected leader among the Tikiwood Sentinels, and he is known for his courage and determination. Thornstrike is known for his deadly accuracy with his bow. Thornstrike's sword is called the "Blade of the Forest." It is a powerful weapon that is said to be made of the finest steel. It is engraved with ancient runes, and it is said to be imbued with the power of the forest. Thornstrike is incredibly skilled with his sword, and he is able to wield it with deadly precision. Thornstrike often leads the Waywatchers in their hunt, as they silently strike from the shadows, eliminating key targets and sowing confusion among the enemy ranks.

Blossomshade is a powerful sorceress who is deeply devoted to protecting her forest. She is a master of nature magic, and she uses her powers to repel her enemies. She is particularly skilled at fighting the undead and the Dark Elves, two of the greatest threats to her home. Blossomshade is also a wise and compassionate leader. She is always willing to help those in need, and she is always looking for ways to improve the lives of her people. She is a true inspiration to the Tikiwood Sentinels, and she is a symbol of hope for the future.

In times of great need, Blossomshade is known to call upon the power of the legendary Queen Ariel herself. Queen Ariel is the goddess of the Wood Elves, and her power is immense. When Blossomshade calls upon Queen Ariel, it is a sign that the situation is dire. However, it is also a sign that there is still hope. With the help of Queen Ariel, Blossomshade and the Tikiwood Sentinels can overcome any challenge.

The tiki-masked halflings, despite their small stature, are a formidable and awe-inspiring force to be reckoned with. They expertly blend the ancient art of song and dance with the ferocity of battle, creating a unique combat style that is both mesmerizing and terrifying. As they charge into combat, their captivating and haunting chants echo through the forest, striking fear into the hearts of their enemies. These masked warriors are truly a fearsome presence on the battlefield.

The spiritual heart of the Tikiwood Sentinels is the wood golem Spiritbark, who serves as the ultimate guardian and protector. With his immense strength and resilience, Spiritbark can tear through even the most formidable of foes. Spiritbark, once a noble Treeman, was transformed into a living tiki totem by the mystical powers of the tiki-masked halflings. Seeking to strengthen their bond with the forest, these enigmatic beings remade Spiritbark with the essence of tiki, enhancing his connection the forest. In this new form, Spiritbark stands as a symbol of unity and harmony between the Wood Elves and the tiki-masked halflings, embodying the spirit of their shared love for the forest.

The Dryads, as magical creatures bound to the trees, command the very essence of nature to entangle and ensnare their foes, creating a formidable barrier between the darkness and the sanctity of their home. They patrol the forest, looking for signs of danger. They heal wounded plants and animals and protect the forest from harm. The Dryads are a symbol of the strength and resilience, and they will never hesitate to fight for their home.

Soaring high above the Tikiwood Sentinels, the majestic eagle Windtalon keeps a watchful eye over the enchanted forest. As a trusted and loyal companion to the Wood Elves, Windtalon is a symbol of freedom and the untamed spirit of the skies. Windtalon's keen eyesight, unmatched by any creature in the forest, allows him to spot approaching enemies from great distances, enabling the Tikiwood Sentinels to prepare for battle and strengthen their defenses. In times of need, Windtalon's razor-sharp talons effortlessly tear through the flesh and armor of any who dare to threaten his friends. Thornstrike and Windtalon often work together to coordinate the Tikiwood Sentinels in battle. Windtalon's aerial perspective allows him to relay valuable information to Thornstrike, giving the Sentinels a tactical advantage in the heat of combat.

The Tikiwood Sentinels play a crucial role in defending the enchanted forest from those who seek to corrupt it. As a united force, they are a symbol of the power of unity and the enduring spirit of the forest, proving that even the mightiest of foes can be vanquished when the hearts of brave warriors beat as one. Their combined might, along with their unique blend of song, dance, and battle, make the Tikiwood Sentinels an awe-inspiring and unforgettable force within the Wood Elf realm -- a testament to the power of unity and the enduring spirit of the forest.

Blitz Bowl Ultimate Edition Leaked Images

Earlier this year, Games Workshop announced "Blitz Bowl: Ultimate Edition".  Leaked images have now been found showing some of the changes to the game, including what looks to be a new stat for blocking!

The leaked photos confirms that 19 teams will be included in the box, which means all but one of the 20 existing teams in Blood Bowl will have rules in this edition.  It appears that the individual player cards have been replaced with team cards which will have all the stats for every player on the team.

In addition to some stat tweaks to a few positions on the Human team (the Blitzer is now Move 7, and the Catchers is Move 8), the inclusion of a brand new stat for every team is getting much attention - what appears to be a block stat (of 1) in shown for both the Humans and Skaven.  This would allow certain players to roll a certain amount of block dice without the need of special text (see for example, the Black Orc).  This also opens up possibilities for even stronger positions or players, such as Ogres.  The fact that now three block dice (of a single color) are included in the game (instead of two block dice for each of the two teams) further supports the expectation that blocking rules have changed.

Further leaked images show a new "Rookies To Watch" card (which will help out inexperienced players) and the two pitches included in this edition.

If past timing is any indication, Blitz Bowl Ultimate Edition will release this fall. The original Blitz Bowl was first available for purchase at Gen Con 2018 (in August) and was later was available for purchase in early September 2018. Blitz Bowl Season 2 had an official release date of Monday, September 21, 2020.

Tau XV25 Stealth Battlesuits

I recently finished painting up some Tau XV25 Stealth Battlesuits for use in One Page Rules (Grimdark Future: Firefight) and Warhammer 40,000: Fireteam

I wanted to build a squad of transparent troops to reflect the cloaking technology of the Tau.  I painted the other miniatures (markerlight drone and the a homing beacon) in a mottled pink camouflage pattern (using a small piece of sea sponge) to match the surrounding landscape, complete with pink flower tufts from Shadow's Edge Miniatures.

Games Workshop Announces "Blitz Bowl: Ultimate Edition"

On it's Warhammer Community page, Games Workshop has announced Blitz Bowl: Ultimate Edition, (along with a number of other games).

According to Games Workshop, Blitz Bowl: Ultimate Edition includes "two new teams are ready to tussle in a tumultuous try-out – six Human players form The Reavers, while six Skaven make up The Scramblers"

On close examination of the picture, it is hard to make out the main changes to the game, other than the inclusion of the Skaven as a team, the color of the plastics, a new format for the cards, a new board option (with fire pits), and pink dice.

Based on prior releases (that were first shown at the New York Toy Fair), we can expect Blitz Bowl: Ultimate Edition (and the other games previewed) to be released this fall.  The first Blitz Bowl was previewed at the New York Toy Fair on March 1, 2018.  It was first available for purchase at Gen Con 2018 (in August of that year).  It later was available for purchase (from Barnes and Noble stores) in early September 2018.  Blitz Bowl Season 2 was announced on February 22, 2020 and had an official release date of Monday, September 21, 2020.

One other thing to take note of is that while in the past these releases were "available in select independent retailers in the USA, Canada and Germany, including Barnes & Noble stores," there is no mention of Barnes & Noble in this year's announcement.  There have been rumors that the games previewed will be released through Games Workshop stores and not be limited to Barnes & Noble (and a limited number of other select retailers) that prevented many from buying them.

Classic Warhammer Fantasy Miniatures: Dryads

I recently again painted a few classic Warhammer Fantasy Battle miniatures, this time the Dryads sculpted by Trish Morrison back in the mid-1990s.

I won these off of Ebay about a year ago and they had been sitting around primed Army Painter Leather Brown until a week ago.  I picked out some simple details, washed them with Army Painter Dark Tone, and then lightly dry-brushed them.  I aligned the style of their bases to join my pack of Wood Elves by added some pink flowers in an attempt to tie them all together.

A Half Price Books Rant

When I visit thrift stores or used books stores, I always check for out of print wargaming miniatures and books.  Over the last few years, I've had occasional good luck at Half Price Books, once finding a copy of 'Ere We Go for under twenty dollars.

However, since that time I've noticed a disturbing trend at HPB - many wargaming books are now tremendously overpriced.  HPB's own "Pricing Policy" states:

The great majority of books and other items we sell in stores are priced at half the current list price or less. Here are some exceptions:

  • Select current releases and other NEW items
  • COLLECTIBLES and out-of-print materials
I understand not all rare or collectable books can be priced at or below list price, but some of their prices are now just absurd.  On Sunday, I stopped by HPBs in Tacoma and found the worst example yet of this - Warhammer: Warriors of Chaos (published in 2013)... for $79.99.

Blackstone Fortress Spindle Drones

A few months ago I finished painting up eight Spindle Drones, found in Games Workshop's Blackstone Fortress game.  These metallic-organic arachnids help defend Blackstone Fortress from intruders.  I primed these robotic war machines in metallic silver, then washed them with a purple Army Painter wash.  I finished up their bases simply, with some crackle media and flock.

I may have a few uses for them - they could be used for 15mm "tri-pod" aliens (a la War of the Worlds) in a superhero game, for One Page Rules: Grimdark Firefight as proxies for Snipers (Rebel Guerrillas faction), or for an additional small unit add-on in a game of Warhammer 40,000.

Classic Warhammer Fantasy Miniatures: Bloodletters of Khorne

A few month ago, I picked up some mid-1990s Khorne Bloodletters from Ebay.  This iteration of Bloodletters are much more chunky than the 1989 originals (the arched, lithe Alan Perry versions from the Slaves to Darkness volume of Realm of Chaos).

The models that I won were sculpted by Aly Morrison and Colin Dixon around 1996.  I repainted them, adding in a deeper, more vibrant red, along with some blue highlights and over-brushing.  I then rebased them to match a small, fully painted Chaos army I also won off of Ebay.  I think they match those models fairly well and combined they will give me a smallish Chaos force to meet my Wood Elves in future skirmishes....

Classic Warhammer Fantasy Miniatures: Ariel, Mage Queen of Loren

I painted up another classic Warhammer Fantasy Battle miniature, this time it's Ariel, sculpted by Gary Morley, again from back in the mid-1990s.  She was one of Citadel's "super-sized" Warhammer models -- similar to other Morley sculpts such as Nagash and Ariel's Wood Elf companion, Orion.  I won her off Ebay in a steal of a deal, and repainted her over the course of a few months (as a side project alongside other painting projects).

Ariel will lead a pack of Wood Elves that I also purchased off of Ebay, for which I only did some very minor enhancements.  I aligned the style of all their bases, highlighted each model with pink, and then added some flowers in an attempt to tie them all together.  They should be a very small (but fun) Wood Elves force to play with down the road.

Classic Warhammer Fantasy Miniatures: Dark Elf Army

Over the course of the last many months I've been collecting a number of painted units from Ebay with the intention of creating a small Dark Elf Warhammer Fantasy Battle army.  Most of them were painted to a good standard, and I simply needed to touch up each unit, adding some details, re-basing, and dipping (using my normal method) for some consistency.  I added the Dark Elf Assassin I painted a few months ago, and also added a Dark Elf Repeating Bolt Thrower that I painted up a couple of weeks ago.  Finally, I printed some appropriate banners from Kinko's, and the army was complete.  I'm very happy with the minimal painting time and cost.

The figures are a mix of Citadel and Marauder Miniatures from the mid-1980s to around the mid-1990s.  My favorites are the two Doom Drakes - proto-Cold Ones - that have a more primal and fun look, (at least to me).  Finding square bases of the appropriate size will continue to be a big challenge, but I've already started buying painted units from Ebay for small Chaos, High Elf, Dwarf, and Empire forces (when the price is right).

Classic Warhammer Fantasy Miniatures: Giant Eagle

A few weeks ago I painted up yet another classic Warhammer Fantasy Battle miniature, this time sculpted by the prolific duo Aly and Trish Morrison.  This eagle was originally released in 1993 as part of Marauder's MB16 Elf Lord on Giant War Eagle boxset, and later released separately without its rider as a Giant Eagle.

This was an Ebay purchase, and it was my first time painting a bird (at least of this size).  I relied heavily upon the dry-brush method and finished it up the miniature with a matching 1990s-style base in green.  It was both fun and fast to paint up.

Classic Warhammer Fantasy Miniatures: Grey Wizard

I recently finished painting up another old classic Warhammer Fantasy Battle miniature.  This time it's the Grey Wizard (073791/3) designed by Dave Andrews from back in the early 1990s.

The guy has been in my collection, half painted, since the early 2000s.  His sword was painted with a special green paint during an in-store painting class at the old Games and Gizmos Genesis store in Redmond.  The metal was shaved down and a green translucent paint was painted over the bare metal.  It gives it a metallic sheen.

Although a Grey Wizard, I went for a more bluish-grey color for his robes.  I had fun finishing him up with a classic 1990s-style base.
